Tchaikovsky was also a gay composer. Yeah, I'm guessing your family and church leaders didn't know how prevalent gay composers were. Pop music is downright heterosexual by comparison.
I've always been a Bernstein fanboy. So many gay men in his shows... He really spoke to us, in the only way he could at that time.
