Men with Tree Trunk Penises

I know it's just a trick of perspective, but I love the photos where the guy's aroused penis stands as tall as a tree trunk,  taking up half the frame.

And his balls look bigger than his head.

Not too many older guys post them.  Maybe only twinks have the technical expertise.  Or penises that can stand straight up.

It looks like it's standing next to him.  I expect him to put his arm around it and say "Have you met my little buddy?"

It wasn't the best idea to use a soda can to demonstrate his length -- they're only about 5" high.  Now, if he was thicker than a soda can....

300 Naked Men Before Breakfast

I looked at over 300 pictures of naked men this morning before breakfast.

Big and small, thin and fat, flaccid and aroused, all ages (18+), races, shapes, and sizes.

And, if I had the time and inclination, I could easily look at 300 more.

When I was growing up in Rock Island, and even through my years in West Hollywood in the 1980s and 1990s, you might see ten pictures of naked men per month, if you were lucky.

They were glossy photos of professional models in expensive magazines.

Nude photos of amateurs were extremely rare.  Photo labs wouldn't develop them, so you had to have your own darkroom.

Once I photographed Fred from the waist up immediately after his orgasm.  We sent it in to the photo lab, laughing, knowing that the lab technicians would have no idea what they were processing.

Even shirtless photos were rare.  Occasionally a shirtless celebrity would show up in a movie magazine.  Or you could look at the underwear ads in clothes catalogs.

Beginning around 1990, cameras appeared that developed the pictures on the spot, so you didn't need a photo lab.  Suddenly you could get nude photos.

But only of your friends, who you had seen naked in real life.  There wasn't much point.

Once one of Fred's friends flew out to West Hollywood for a visit, took some nude photos of me, and showed them to every gay man in Des Moines.

In the 1990s, Usenet groups, and later bulletin boards, allowed you to look at -- and download -- photos of shirtless and naked men for a small fee. Only a few per week, all professional models, but still, it was an amazing improvement.

Checking for the new photos on your usenet groups and bulletin boards became a standard part of your morning routine.

The explosion began around 2007, when smartphones became capable of taking uncensored photos and submitting them instantly.

Suddenly every guy with a smartphone and a bathroom mirror could post himself and his friends on the internet.

Not every guy did, of course: if you were shy, conservative, sensitive, if you had a small penis or a self-esteem problem, if you were worried about your career, you wouldn't bother.

I have some shirtless photos online, and some penis shots, but not both together.

We're much pickier now.  A big penis or hairy chest is not enough.  To attract our attention, the guy has to have something that stands out: a smile, a tattoo, a special combination of face and physique.  Plus we look at the background of the photo, analyze the composition, structure, and lighting.

We have become connoisseurs of naked men.

Which is fine.

But sometimes I miss the days when seeing a photo of a naked man was a rare, exciting experience, something to be cherished.

Not the 20 minutes before breakfast in your daily routine.

The Bare Butts of World War II

Between 1935 and 1947, the Farm Security Administration sent out dozens of photographers to document contemporary American life.  They photographed farmers, miners, schoolteachers, schoolboys from Maine to New Mexico, in big cities and small towns.

A surprising number of photographs zeroed on bare chests and bulging biceps, like these CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) workers in Maryland.

Or these young men swimming in Lake Providence, Louisiana.

There are also a lot of bare butts on display.  Apparently rear nudity wasn't NSFW in 1942.

A coal miner demonstrates the shower he built in his basement.

Sargent Cambliar showers at his army base.

I'm not sure why the students in a "short farming course" at the University of Wisconsin need to shower after class.  Maybe it's dusty in the fields.

A fireman in Washington, DC strips down after a call.

A FSA Camp in Wilder, Idaho.

This one is just captioned "Sunray, Texas," but he's probably a factory worker.

I couldn't find any penises, but it's rather interesting to find so much male nudity in government-authorized photographs 70 years ago.

Ten Guys I'd Definitely Kick Out of Bed

I never refuse an offer to go down on a friend or a friend's boyfriend, or to have him go down on me.  It's just basic courtesy, like a handshake in the straight world.  Who cares if he's not at all my type?  A penis is a penis.

When guys approach me at a bar or on Grindr, I'm a little picker, but still, I say "yes" to most requests for or hookups.  I figure, why not?  A penis is a penis.  Typically I'll refuse only if:

1. I've already had a hookup today.
2. I'm tired or not feeling well.
3. The request is sleazy or demanding.
4. The guy expects me to drive to Timbuktu.
5. He's impossibly ugly.

Here are ten guys who fall into Category #5.  If you like them, fine -- everybody is somebody's ideal.  But even if they were my best friend's new boyfriend, I'd be making an excuse and heading for the door.

All photos are taken from the tumblr site collegecocks, but don't let that dissuade you from visiting: most of the guys depicted are very attractive.

1.  Maybe if he showers, washes his hair, shaves, and comes down off whatever he's on.

2.  Whoever thought that sticking your tongue out was sexy?  Especially when you have dumb hair, a skinny, emaciated body, and multiple tattoos?

3.  A long, crazy beard combined with short hair!  It's like he's stuck halfway into his transformation into a Biblical patriarch.

4.  I'm attracted to guys in suits, but that's such a long, narrow weasel face, with thin, puckered lips and thin, delicate hands.  Nice cock, though.

5. Scary face, skinny pale body that has never seen the sun.

Did Swim Teams Once Compete Naked?

While researching my article on old swim team photos, I discovered an unusual sidebar of beefcake history: up until the 1960s, men and boys on swim teams competed naked!

I discovered these photos on the internet.  At first I thought it was a spoof website -- surely men didn't swim naked in the the skittish 1940s and 1950s, where male nudity was forbidden in magazines and in movies, and pants were designed to eliminate bulges.

And some of these photos seem faked.  The fonts are off, and there's no way nude photos would appear in high school or college yearbooks.

And the boys in the photos look a little old to be in high school or even college.  Maybe they are ordinary nudists, with a swim team caption photoshopped in.

Plus there are ample photos of high school, college, and Olympic swim teams of the 1920s-1950s wearing body hugging suits, with bulges but nothing else.

But I've gotten verification in legitimate magazine articles and personal reminiscences.  Men and boys in some schools actually did compete naked during the period.

Giving spectators an eyeful, even with the shrinkage.

Edmund Teske's Nude Men

Edmund Teske (1911-1996) was an experimental photographer known for his montages, juxtaposing nude men with images emphasizing their eroticism, joy, contemplation, or fragility.

In the 1940s he often photographed his lover, Richard Soakup.

He photographed many other of his friends, fellow artists, and lovers in poses of quiet contemplation.

The Navy Pre-Flight Training School: World War II Beefcake

In February 1942, just at the start of U.S. involvement in World War II, St. Mary's College in California was chosen as one of four sites for a Navy Pre-Flight Training School, where new recruits would get four weeks of basic training.

The Navy took over some of the campus buildings and built others, and in July the camp opened.  It was operational until 1946.

Recruits received military training and took academic classes (mathematics, physics, military law) and athletics (boxing, swimming, and football).  One of the football instructors was future president Gerald Ford.

Upon entry, they were photographed in their underwear -- front, rear, side.  A number of the photographs have been recovered and posted on the internet.

They only give initials, so it will be virtually impossible to track down these guys and find out what happened to them later in life.

We will have to be content with glimpses into the beefcake and bulges of the past.

Warning: Explicit Beauty Ahead

When every guy with a cell phone posts nude selfies on the internet, there are thousands of fabulous faces, sculpted physiques, and gigantic penises on display every time you boot up your computer.

Some photos stand out from the crowd by paying pay special attention to background, light, color, and composition, display some striking emotion, provide a backstory.  Others add a single tiny detail that transforms the photo from merely depicting a cute guy to being beautiful in itself.

1. The pale sculpted physique is offset by the dark checkered shirt and hat, and the cock and balls are offset by the jeans.  But it's the food cooking on the stove that give this photo a lifelike, homey feel: it's a moment of real life.  Dinner is almost ready.

2. Ok, some nicely rounded muscles, and two hands on his enormous uncut penis.  You expect a bragging smirk, or at least a cruisy smile, but this guy's expression is soft and vulnerable, his head against a soft beige pillow.  He's worried that he won't meet your expectations.

3. Slim backside, scruffy hair, aroused penis almost hidden.  What makes this photo is the bright hippie-graffiti  that fills the wall and reflects the multi-colored blanket.  This is a hipster just waking up after a long night of jazz music, Beat poety, and discussions of the meaninglessness of life.

4. Sculpted physique, flawless skin glowing in strong light, jeans drawn down just enough to suggest that they're about to fall off.  The gold watch draws attention to the hands.  Blurry urban background suggest the dangers and delights of the street.

5.  I love photos where the aroused penis stands tall, taking up half of the frame, but this photo adds to its intrigue by displaying the guy's jarhead and khaki shirt and belt.  He must be in the military.  There's a poster showing a tropical beach over his shoulder: he's looking for an escape, a "good place."
