Showering with Two Boys at a Church Conference in Switzerland

When I was sixteen years old, I was selected to join 500 Nazarene teenagers from around the world in Fiesch, Switzerland for our International Institute.

It was like summer camp, with daily sermons, Bible studies, jump quizzes, and seminars on soul-winning, except we had afternoons and one full day off for field trips and sightseeing  We could go out on our own, as long as we:
1. Didn't try to make friends with the locals.
2. Didn't set foot in any Catholic church.
3. Were back by 7:00 pm.

But every good Nazarene knows how to bend the rules.

The full post is on RG Beefcake and Boyfriends.

  1. You're probably wondering, if I had been studying Spanish since junior high, why couldn't I understand Portuguese? The two languages are very similar. You can see similarities in words, when they're written down. But the spoken languages are not at all mutually intelligible.

  2. We didn't really climb down the Matterhorn, of course. I don't remember where we went, but it took about an hour.

  3. I'm going to think of it as a date, Boomer, even if you don't. It's a sweet story.

That's the first time I've ever heard the term "jump" quizzes. Is that the same as a "pop" quiz? I thought i was up on regional dialects, but I guess you're never too old to learn more!

    1. A jump quiz is a Nazarene invention. The moderator reads a question about the Bible, and the first person who gets his butt off the chair gets to answer it. You play in teams;the book of the Bible is announced in advance, so you can prepare. I spent many hours during my adolescence going over questions and answers. Originally they had a referee assigned to watch the teenagers' butts to see which one got up faster, but then they went with electronic pads. You can go from district to national to international, with trophies and scholarship prizes.

    1. We exchanged addresses, but didn't actually stay in contact. You rarely stayed in contact with anyone far away in those days, unless you were very close, since it took effort to write a leter and post it. In this case, not being able to write in English/Portuguese wold have been another impediment.

  7. Hi. I stumbled onto two of your blogs recently (http://everydayheterosexism.blogspot.com/ and this one, talesofwesthollywood), and enjoyed my visits to both places. I'm taking this opportunity to say hi and I plan to visit both blogs again soon. And I thought you might like to know about a very funny interview that recently appeared on Saturday Night Live. It's an interview with Michelangelo's David by Michael Che. Very funny, and very hot. Here's the link that I posted on my blogspot blog -- https://carlmillerdaniels.blogspot.com/2023/04/michael-longfellow-recently-played.html -- hope you enjoy! Best wishes, Carl Miller Daniels
