The Royal Navy Bath House Nudes

Swedish artist Eugene Jansson (1862-1915) was renowned for his impressionist paintings of nude men.  Near the end of his life, he spent a lot of time at the Navy Bathhouse, a massive gymnasium where sailors roamed naked, doing the same sorts of things we do in bath houses today.

Several photographs of their cavorting have survived.

Rather washed out, but you can still see the good parts.

I've never been a fan of the backside, but there's a penis visible behind him.

What's with the hat?

Care for a bout of nude wrestling?

  1. Yanno, some rez housing tracts have bath houses, but they're just a place to shower and use the terlet. Yeah, seems the geniuses at HUD forgot to include bathrooms in some tracts.

Unsurprisingly, this made going out into the "real world" difficult for me. Like, what's gay about a bath house? I could sort of figure it out from the context of There's Something About Mary, he's arrested for "public lewd acts" for going to a rest area, and we're told they're "the new bath houses".

Learning about gay history from a heterosexual romance. Go figure.
