Bloomington, November 1982
No one came out casually in the 1980s, but it didn't take long for me to suspect Roy, the sophomore education major who worked with me at the Eigenmann Hall Snack bar.
He had big hair and wore bright colors, mostly reds and yellows. He wore rings. He had an overmodulated, feminine voice and a vocabulary heavy on adjectives. His manner was a bit swishy. Ok, a lot swishy.
We were open from 7 p.m. until midnight, selling hamburgers, hot dogs, pizza, cold sandwiches, bagels, and snack items. There were tables and chairs, but most people brought their food into one of the tv lounges, or up to their rooms. So we were alone a lot, and we had lots of opportunities to talk and joke around.
One night he performed "A Lil' Ole Bitty Pissant Country Place" from The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas!
One of my jobs was to replace the soda and lemonade canisters, which involved swinging 50-pound jugs over my head. Roy watched with a cruisy gleam in his eye. "Watch it -- you'll fall," he said, and and clapped his hands onto my waist to steady me. And "accidentally" feel my butt.
Ok, so he was probably gay. But I wasn't going to come out to him until I was sure.
Unfortunately, we didn't work together often. There were always two workers, one on the grill and the other on the counter, both boys or both girls -- so we'd keep our minds on our jobs, Carol, our Boss from Hell, said with a heterosexist flourish. But she alternated the boys, and we just worked twice a week anyway, so during all of the fall 1982 semester, Roy and I only worked together four times..
The third time, just after Halloween, I still hadn't figured out if he was really gay or not, when he mentioned something about church.
Religious? Hetero, then. And homophobic!
"Are you having Anita Bryant as a guest speaker?" I snarked.
"What? No, we're against...um...homophobia, you know."
What kind of church was against homophobia?
"It's a church with a special outreach to people who have been rejected by mainstream churches. Like, you know, prostitutes, and drug addicts...and homosexuals."
"MCC!" I exclaimed. The Metropolitan Community Church, the only church for gay people, was founded by the Rev. Troy Perry in 1968. One of the first gay books I read was his autobiography, The Lord is My Shepherd and He Knows I'm Gay.
For the record, the MCC doesn't have an outreach to prostitutes or drug addicts. Roy put in those others to avoid completely outing himself. I don't know why he put homosexuals at the end, as if they were by far the most disreputable of the lot.
"Oh, you've heard of us?" Roy said with a grin. "It's so great to meet someone else who's....come on, give me a hug!"
He hugged me, but not with the joy of one gay person finding another in the closeted 1980s. With a cruisy tightness. He was interested! Next he'd be asking me for a date.
But I wasn't interested. Roy was nice, but tall, thin, gawdy, gilded, and flamboyant. He smelled of cologne. He wore rings. Not at all my type.
"I've been trying to find a MCC," I said, disentangling myself. "The Gayellow Pages doesn't list any in Indiana."
"There's one in Louisville, Kentucky. I'm from New Washington, about a half-hour drive away. When I'm at home, I always go." He paused. "Why don't you come home with me this weekend, and we'll visit together?"
I hesitated. I knew what "visiting" meant. Spending the night in his bed. I didn't find him attractive. But...a gay church!
"Sure, that would be great," I said without enthusiasm.
New Washington, Indiana
When Roy called for me in the lounge of Eigenmann Hall that Saturday morning, I was astonished. He had somehow managed to transform himself from devotee of show tunes to a devotee of tractor pulls, from fey and theatrical to redneck. The rings and cologne were gone. He had a different haircut. He was wearing tight jeans and a lumberjack shirt. He looked...well, rather hot.
"Ready to go?" he said, in a deep, non-modulated voice.
"I'm sorry...um...are you Roy's straight brother?"
"Hey, in farm country, you learn to fit in."
New Washington was about two hours south of Bloomington on the shore of the Ohio River, a tiny town with a few bars, a fire station, two churches, and a water tower. He didn't live on a farm, exactly, but his house had a huge back yard that abutted a cornfield, and there was a farm next door.
We had lunch at the house with Roy's parents and brothers (one older with his own place, the other still in high school). Roy wasn't out to them, of course, so our conversation was mostly about our "girlfriends," Darla and Jane (we made out complete biographies on the way down).
"You should have seen this boy in high school!" Dad bragged. "Such a lady-killer -- he was always bringing girls around. Why, I think he had more girlfriends than boy friends!"
Roy grinned at me. "Yeah, I was friends with just about every girl in the school. And quite a few of the boys. The captain of the football team, for instance."
Nobody seemed to catch the joke.
In the afternoon we saw the Ohio River and went for a hike at Charlestown State Park, where Roy turned out to have remarkable stamina.
"Oh, I was up and down these hills all the time when I was a kid. You'd be surprised how much fun I had here." He "accidentally" grabbed my butt.
After dinner at a rather good pizza place, we settled down for a night of Diff'rent Strokes, Silver Spoons, and Mama's Family. We claimed tiredness to avoid having to sit through Love, Sidney, with Tony Randall playing a gay man -- it would be too close for comfort.
Roy's parents put us into the room he used to share with his older brother. There were two twin beds,
I looked at Roy, questioning. He smiled and unbuttoned his lumberjack shirt, revealing a smooth, hard chest. "Why don't you give me a hand?" he said. "I especially need help getting my pants off. They're pretty tight -- and getting tighter by the second."
I didn't need to be asked twice.
In case you were wondering: good kisser, with a Bratwurst, and an anal top.
In the morning I got up early to go for a run. At least, I thought it was early. Dick, Roy's teenage brother, was already up, eating oatmeal at the kitchen table.
With his shirt off -- hard, smooth chests must run in the family.
"Have some oatmeal?" he asked. "The family won't eat for another couple of hours."
"I thought farm folk got up with the chickens."
"Well, we ain't got no chickens. Sit down," he said forcefully. "I want to ask you something."
I sat.
"Are you and Roy together? I mean, dating? Like a couple?"
1980s homophobia required you to say "No, of course not!" But I was too flustered. I just stared.
"Don't freak -- it's fine with me. I knew Roy was that way for a long time. Always with a girl, but never talking about girls, you understand? So I figured when he brought you home, you being so obvious and all...."
"Obvious?" I repeated.
"Well, yeah." He dug into his oatmeal. "No offense, but...well, you're kind of fruity. I could tell right off that you're the girl in the relationship."

Troy's First Video Booth
Montreal, October 2009
Guys who are young or newly out have usually been brainwashed -- I mean socialized -- into the heterosexual ideal of monotony - I mean monogamy. Rejecting all others, sharing your life, heart, and body with just one person til death. Which can't come soon enough.
So when I started dating 23-year old Troy in Upstate New York, he was not amenable to the idea of bringing in a third person to "share."
I pointed out that he went down on me and the Pitcher at the same time, and no one seemed to mind. (See The Satyr's Sinister Scheme.)
"That just happened. I didn't plan on it. But now we're together, and I should be enough for you."
"You're great, but there are a lot of cute guys out there. I want to experience as much masculine beauty as I can."
"What about marital fidelity?" he asked, repeating a buzz word from his childhood.
"That whole mythos was based upon economics. There was only way for a man to ensure that the children he was paying to raise were his own: forbid his wife from having sex with another man. Men don't get pregnant, so why not go for it? Seize the day!"
"Ok...but...I want to warm up first, get used to this whole idea of fooling around on the side."
Well, let's invite someone we already dated into our bed. Maybe Pete the Water Guy.
No, that would be too weird.
Hooking up with a stranger?
A stranger in my apartment? Too risky!
How about a Sex Party? Twenty guys, no waiting.
No. Too many young guys. I'm only into older.
A bath house? There's one in Albany, and....
No.
There weren't a lot more options.
You know what I've always wanted to try? A glory hole. Where you're on one side of a wall, and he's on the other side.
You only see his penis -- he can be anybody you want.
A glory hole? I had tried them at bath houses. Uncomfortable, annoying, and a disembodied penis is not very erotic -- I like to see the guy I'm with, or at least feel him.
But ok. The only place I knew of with such facilities was a video store on the Rue Ste. Catherine in Montreal, so we drove up for the weekend, and ignored the bars, bath houses, and sex shops.
Although we did see the Bonsecours Market and Centre d'histoire de Montréal, which seemed to be rather too inclusive of local celebrities from the 1970s.
Troy wanted to try out the glory hole at 10:00 pm on Saturday night, when most of the gay residents and visitors were out on dates, or at the bars, bath houses, and sex shops.... who was left to go to an adult video store? Trolls, druggies, hustlers, closet cases...
We wanted into the brightly-lit front room, browsed among the gay videos and porn magazines, and then headed for the back, where there was a lounge area and two rows of small booths.
There were about a dozen guys standing or sitting in the lounge, waiting for someone attractive to show up. As I suspected, a rough crowd. A lot of rumpled clothes, unshaven faces, and sallow, haunted looks. Some guys were just trying to get out of the cold.
Definitely bottoms. They wanted to be on the receiving end. Troy wasn't going to get a lot of action tonight.
The booths were about the size of a telephone booth. You went in, sat down, deposited a loonie (a Canadian dollar coin), and got to watch 5 minutes of a porn movie. Another loonie, another 5 minutes. You could also deposit $5 for 30 minutes, or $10 for 60.
This could get expensive.
We opened the door to an unoccupied booth, and saw that it had two glory holes, connecting to the booths on either side. Both were deserted.
"I'm a little nervous," Troy said softly. "What if the guy isn't my type? I only like older guys, with muscles and chest hair."
"That's the point of the glory holes," I said. "Disembodied cocks, no body type needed. But tell you what -- I'll wait a few minutes, then go into that booth." I gestured at the one on his left. "Then you can pretend you don't know who it is, so it will be like going down on a stranger."
He smiled. "Ok, let's try that for starters."
I left him alone. The door shut, and the "Occupied" light came on. I went back out to the entry area and scanned the video titles and got cruised by a scary-looking guy in a green trenchcoat. To discourage him, I went out to the front room and browsed among the sex toys.
Then I returned and went to the booth to the left of Troy. Scary guy followed, and went into the booth next to me. His mouth immediately appeared at his glory hole. I ignored him, unzipped, and squeezed through the glory hole into Troy's booth.
He ignored me.
I swayed a little bit.
He ignored me.
I pulled back in, knelt, and looked through the glory hole -- at the back of a guy's butt.
"Ahem!" I cleared my throat and pushed through again. I felt a hand giving me a desultory squeeze.
"Ahem!" I zipped up, went over to Troy's booth, and opened the door. He was on his knees in front of a beefy Bear, in his 40s, wearing a cowboy hat. Why hadn't I seen him in the lounge area?
"Occupé!" he growled.
Troy looked up. "C'est bon -- il est mon copain. Boomer, this is Max. He's a farmer. Isn't that cool?"
"Enchanté!" Max grunted, obviously miffed at the coitus interruptus.
"You exchanged a lot of information through a glory hole!'
"He just opened the door to the booth, and we started talking. It's a lot better than a disembodied penis, isn't it?"
Max pulled Troy to his knees and zipped up. "Ta chum ne se souci pas?" Your boyfriend doesn't mind?
" Bien sûr que non! Il était son idée!" It was his idea! He enveloped Max in a long kiss. "Do you mind if Max comes back to the hotel with us?"
That was the end of Troy's insistence on monogamy, although he backslid a little when I made a teenage Friend with Benefits.

The Gay Kid in the Farmhouse in Plains
February 20th, 1996: A Tuesday. Lane and I are living in San Francisco. I walk down Folsom Street on my way to my part-time job, and run into Mickey, the leatherman who never leaves South of Market, not even to go to the Castro. We have lunch at a gay Chinese restaurant, and I talk him into participating in the youth outreach program at the MCC.
February 19th, 2006: A Sunday. I'm visiting Amsterdam. I have dinner at an Indonesian restaurant, and then go to the Horseman's Club on Warmoestraat, for men with gigantic beneath-the-belt gifts. I meet Azi from Suriname, who has a Kovbasa+ . He invites me home to be a "birthday" present for his college-aged brother, Eli.
February 23rd, 2016: A Tuesday. I live in Plains, a small town in the vast Midwestern wilderness.
Except I'm not in town; I'm at a farmhouse, gazing at the dark vastness of snow-covered fields through the window. (Photo from National Geographic)
And then at the country-kitchen style living room, where heterosexuals are occupying couches and chairs, listening to a middle aged woman named Claire read poetry.
West Hollywood, San Francisco, Amsterdam, farmhouse. How the mighty have fallen!
Her poems are sort of like Spoon River Anthology, telling the story of a farm family during the Great Recession of 2007-2008: middle-aged Jo (that must be Claire), her worry-laden husband, Grandpa and Grandma, her teenage daughter who wants to be a farmer, and her teenage son, who wishes he was a thousand miles away.
Me, too. It's about a thousand miles to the Flex Club in Cleveland. It's probably busy right about now.
Do the poems at least describe the husband's hard muscles glistening in the sun, or dark-eyed farmboys going skinny-dipping in the creek?
Nope. Lots of lines about grandpa smelling soft earth, Jo's smooth skin starting to mottle with age, the husband's inner strength that guides you through adversity, and the son looking up at bluebirds flying to Oz.
Maybe he escaped to the nearest gay neighborhood.
West Hollywood, San Francisco, Amsterdam, farmhouse. Where are the snows of yesterday?
I hated Spoon River, I hate these poems, and I hate farmhouses. What am I even doing here?
The hostess invited me. She's a professor at the University, so it's a good career move.
I look around at the other poetry aficionados. Mostly elderly women, a couple of middle-aged men. A slim, creepy-looking bald guy leading an even creepier-looking bald guy by the arm.
Lovers -- no -- father and son.
At the last heterosexual gathering I went to, I hooked up with Dustin, the host's son. But no cute college boys burst in to fill the room with life and excitement. I am alone.
West Hollywood, San Francisco, Amsterdam, farmhouse.
Years go falling in the fading light. Buy me a ticket on the last train home tonight.
Question time. I raise my hand. "Are the son and daughter based on your real-life children?"
"To an extent. But Jane is the one who didn't want to become a farmer -- she's living in New York. Kyle loved farm life."
Didn't he escape to a gay neighborhood? "What's he doing now?"
"He majored in agriculture at the university, and now he's an agronomist up in Yankton."
Someone else raises a hand to ask about the dramatic structure of the poems. My wheels spin.
Evidence that Kyle is gay:
1. He longed to escape.
2. He would be around 30 now, and Claire didn't mention a wife and kids.
3. A reference to Judy Garland in The Wizard of Oz.
Evidence that Kyle is hetero:
1. He works as an agronomist
2. In Yankton, South Dakota.
Can you imagine anything more stultifying than standing in a vast field, beneath a blank sky, looking at plants? For a living?
But I really want him to be gay. I want there to be gay people in farmhouses in vast fields, beneath blank skies.
It's easy to look Kyle up: he's one of Claire's facebook friends.
He has indefatigably hetero country interests: Brad Paisley, Lonesome Dove, sports, sports, and sports. But he also likes Modern Family, and he's a proponent of marriage equality. Besides, no wife or kids mentioned.
I friend him with a "Hi, I know your Mom."
The next day, we chat.
Kyle: I see you've lived in L.A., New York, and Fort Lauderdale. What are you doing on the Plains?
Boomer: A job, what else? What are you doing in Yankton?
Kyle: I love it here! It's my sister Jane who's the big city gal. She and her girlfriend live right in the heart of the East Village. Hey, maybe they were your neighbors!"
Jane and her...girlfriend? I was so obsessed with finding a gay boy in the farmhouse that I never thought about the girl: growing up thinking she was all alone, getting crushes on cheerleaders instead of football players, discovering what "lesbian" meant on the internet, plotting her escape to a gay neighborhood in the biggest big city she could find.
West Hollywood, San Francisco, Amsterdam, farmhouse. Et in Arcadia ego.
Well, every story can't be about a hookup.
